I know it’s not the most environmentally friendly kitchen tool in the world, so you don’t need to tell me, but it’s one of those things I need to have in my kitchen. And believe me, I’m not overly picky about what goes on in my kitchen.
The tool I’m talking about is plastic wrap.
Environmentally unfriendly, but a necessity when it comes to the choice of either wasting or saving that 2/3 of a sandwich Ethan says he wants to eat later. I know I could use containers, and I do, but not for everything. Big leftovers, kids school lunches, etc. all get containers. Leftovers in casserole dishes don’t get transferred to different containers (more dishes!) so it’s plastic wrap to the rescue.
Usually Michael picks up decent name-brand plastic wrap. It tears easily on it’s little cutter thingy (if you know the name for this, please do tell) and it’s sticky enough that it seals in the freshness. He’s been trustworthy all these years, so I have always been confident in his selection.
About a month ago we ran out. Like usual I had “plastic wrap” written on the grocery list. He came home with the store brand. Fine, whatever, I’ll give it a go. That’s me, glass-half-full, work with what we’re given and carry on …
After using it once my chipper attitude changed to a frustrated glass-half-empty and screw-you-plastic-wrap attitude.
It’s crap. Serious crap.
It doesn’t cut on the cutter thing. It doesn’t cut with scissors or a knife. It has to be torn and doesn’t tear straight. So if I’m aiming for a 4″ wide piece I have to start with a 10″ wide piece and hope to Pete I get at least a section that is wide enough to wrap up whatever it is I’m wrapping.
If I do get a piece the size I need it doesn’t stick to the edges of the container. The only thing this store brand plastic wrap sticks to is itself, and once it’s stuck to itself, it’s permanent. Which makes it extra difficult to get a piece of the proper proportion.
For the love of Freshness, buy the good stuff, or like me, you’ll be stuck with a brand new box of crap and no idea how to use it. Maybe Lily needs it for crafts or something …
