He Eats Poop

27 Jan

If you are easily grossed out I don’t think you’re going to want to read this one.  :)

This is a disgusting topic, really and truly, but my dog, loveable Dozer, eats poop.  If he can get to his own poop outside before I can pick it up and dispose of it properly, he will eat it.  He will race me to the cat litter box when given the chance.  Gross gross and nasty.

Thankfully for me he doesn’t eat it warm (are you sick yet?  still reading?) and 99% of the time I can get it picked up before he gets to it.

Technically it’s called Coprophagia.

He’s healthy and well fed so we have no idea why he does this.  Perhaps it’s merely because dogs are, by nature, scavengers, or maybe he’s trying to clean up.  We’ve never scolded him for pooping in the house (he only did it once as a pup anyway).  We have tried the vet stuff Forbid and it worked while it was in his system, but once it was done the poop eating continued.  Gross.  I’ve put tabasco and hot peppers on it in the yard to see if we can teach him it’s spicy (therefore not appealing to him at all – he eats shit, but he thinks spices are the devil … he’s a little messed up).

Did I mention this is gross?

Disgusting.

We tell him no and “leave it” if we catch him going for it.

I’ve never had a dog do this before and I’m sort of at a loss.  We had hoped he would outgrow it, but he’s almost two years old now and he hasn’t.  I guess prevention is the best solution.

Do you know how hard it is to pick up poop that freezes instantly to the ground when it is -20°C outside?

So yeah, my sweet and gorgeous dog is a nasty poop eater and if there was one thing I could change about him, it would be this …
